Connecting Dumbarton
Connecting Dumbarton
The Connecting Dumbarton project has transformed the route between Dumbarton Central Station and the town centre into an inspiring, welcoming pathway. Bigg Design created a striking collection of artworks that adorn an underpass and street lighting columns with large-scale laser-cut and custom-painted aluminium pieces that celebrate both the town’s rich history and its dynamic present. Accompanying these artworks are information ‘portals’ that provide visitors with deeper insight into the artwork’s themes and the town’s heritage via illuminated graphic displays. Adding to the experience, a series of laser-cut ‘banners’ hang gracefully from the street columns, further enhancing the route with complementary, site-specific art. Together, these elements create an immersive journey that connects the past, present, and future of Dumbarton.
The artworks sat alongside a refreshed landscaping design by MBLA Ltd with new paving, traffic measures and planting. Balfour Beatty was the main contractor, whilst Scott Associates Sculpture and Design fabricated the artworks on Bigg Design’s behalf. New LED lighting was designed by Lightfolio. The project was on behalf of West Dunbartonshire Council.
